Grand Prix of Figure Skating 2014 Rostelecom Cup Men’s and Dance Events

As of now, all of the short programs have been performed by each discipline. Here are our feelings about the resuts, and a few links to the programs for the Men’s and Dance events:

Men’s:

1. Javier Fernandez(ESP) 93.92

So Javi is on top of the leaderboard with a fantastic performance to 70s classic Black Betty by Ram Jam. While hip action alone might not get him a ton of points, it’s safe to say this triple axel and his fantastic dance moves stole the show. Fernandez will have to skate completely cleanly in the Freeskate in order to maintain his 3 point lead over Sergei Voronov. Now that all figure skating disciplines allow music with lyrics, expect a lot more personality and style to come out of the men’s and women’s events.

Javier Fernandez of Spain perfroms his short program to Black Betty.

Ladies Short Program:

1. Alaine Chartrand(CAN) 61.18

To be honest, none of the women put together an absolutely flawless performance. Chartrand, along with most other competitors, seemed tense, and as a result, sloppy.  Spins could be more centered, connecting steps more fluid. That being said, the girl is on top of the leaderboard. However, there are only 4 points between 1st and 4th, so it’s still anybody’s game.

Canada’s Alaine Chartrand performs a layback and catchfoot in her short program. She leads the ladies event by 1.33 points.
